Documentary Coalport

Dated Coalport submitted by Haydn Hansell and Dr Paul McKay.

Both plates are painted in puce monochrome with rural Portuguese scenes, and titled on the reverse as ‘Castle Alagrete near Portalegre’ and ‘Talavera’. This is handwritten in puce along with the date of 1813. The plate showing Talavera bears the additional inscription ‘Windsor Oct.r 25 1813’. Diameter – 8 1/2 inches.

The plates are of particular interest to military historians as they were painted during the Peninsular War (1808-14), when the British, Spanish and Portuguese joined forces to fight Napoleon’s French army on the Iberian Peninsula.
